Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 is their new cloud business software offering. Dynamics 365 for Financials is their ERP solution based on Microsoft Dynamics NAV. It has been designed to be intuitive and easy to use. As a cloud only solution, so you do not need to invest in servers, infrastructure and staff to run it – it is available as a subscription at € or $/user/month. Learn about what application areas of NAV are part of Dynamics 365 for Financials and whether there is a compelling reason to sell and implement it.

Our panelist brought their experiences with NAV, GP, Economics/C5 and compare that to Dynamics 365 for Financials.

Andrew Good, COO, Dynamics App Alliance

Andrew’s extensive knowledge has been built from personal experiences with a wide range of companies. His hands-on operational knowledge comes from Engineering, Maintenance, management and operational roles at Unilever and Sony Music. He has project experience ranging from factory upgrades to systems. 14 years of working with Microsoft Dynamics NAV follows successful projects in ERP, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (or EAM), and quality systems.

His commitment to continuous improvement and ongoing education is reflected in both his personal and professional roles within Liberty Grove Software. To support the community, end users and partners that we work with, he is a Lead MCT, DCP (Dynamics Certified Professional), MCP and Professional Engineer.

He has helped customers get the most out of their NAV systems, through integrations, upgrades, and extensions that allow them to deal with their changing business environments. These projects range from integrations, financial operations, rentals, distribution and manufacturing. His manufacturing experience ranges from aircraft, automotive and steel to bakery.  Each of the companies has had unique business processes that needed to be handled in NAV. Simple and effective solutions have been developed and implemented passed on a detailed understanding of the underlying requirements and data.

Microsoft’s Dynamics – 365 Financials has been a natural extension of his experience and he has been helping organizations, the community and partners to understand the possibilities. This includes training, and consulting for users and partners.

During the “Project Madeira” preview, Microsoft ran a Technology Adoption Program which resulted in a number of Apps published early.

In this webinar, we discussed what was learned from this program and explained how to get started creating your own apps. We shared tips and tricks on how to evaluate your existing IP and which steps to implement to make sure you meet validation requirements.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Release


In October 2016 Microsoft Dynamics 365 will be launched simultaneously at Directions EMEA in Prag and Dynamics User Group convention in Tampa Florida. At this point we will get to see Microsoft Dynamics 365 in action!

As previously discussed, Dynamics 365 will be available in two versions aimed at servicing both the small to midsized business (SMB) and enterprise market.

  • The Business Edition is optimized for organizations with 10-250 users. It is a cloud only offering where the ERP functionality is based on Dynamics NAV, initially with limited CRM functionality.Availability in 2016 will be limited to the USA and Canada, but a roll-out for selected Northern European countries is planned for 2017. It is expected that functionality will be enhanced during 2017, especially with regards to CRM.
  • The Enterprise Edition is optimized for +250 users. It is both a cloud and on premise offering (provided the Azure technology stack is used) that is based on Dynamics AX and CRM Online.

The current take on the Dynamics 365 release dates is listed below

2016 release dates:

  • October 11-14 2016. At Directions EMEA and at Dynamics AX/GP/NAV User Group Summit, Dynamics 365 will be officially launched
  • October 2016. Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Financials (i.e Project Madeira) will be made available in the US and Canada
  • November 2016. Microsoft Dynamics 365 – Enterprise Edition will be released.

2017 release plans:

  • Spring 2017: Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Sales and Marketing, Business edition should become available.
  • During 2017. Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Financials available in 4 additional European countries (may include Denmark and the UK, but this is speculative at this point).
  • During 2017. Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Business plan will become available.

What to consider when building business apps!

Connecting the Pieces

Any company stepping into the Dynamics 365 eco-system will need to decide how to build their solution. When examining the results of a study performed by IBM by asking 585 mobile application developers and development managers, many of the key findings give pointers to what should be considered.

Specifically, IBM looked at what the one third of the projects that had achieved the criteria for success – fully meeting budget, schedule and project objectives – had in common:

  • The right experience! The teams that can integrate heavy technical experience across the technology used to deliver the solution with the right business and industry knowledge performed better than other teams.
  • The right development platform! The teams that used cloud based platforms and strong DevOps platforms including test automation achieved better results as this allowed for more agility and therefore resulted in shorter time to market.
  • The developers collaborated closely with the entire eco-system. This included design, user experience, quality assurance, business stakeholders and end users. As with any production, collaboration throughout the process keeps everything running smoothly.
  • They analyzed user behavior. It seems that successful project teams don’t just pay attention to the ratings and reviews, they want to get closer to the user experience and gain inspiration based on what they learn.

According to IBM, successful projects are 30% more likely to have at least one developer with more than 5 years of (relevant) development experience. They are 35% more likely to use cloud-based platforms to develop the application and three-fourths of successful projects collaborate using agile software development methods.

In addition to providing the right tools to foster cooperation and developers with the right back-ground, including communication skills. The team should conduct usability testing during development, and continually improve the application by incorporating user feedback and analytical insights.

Should you build your own solution or get help?

Most development organizations have been through numerous projects and have a track record for what works and what can be improved. Still, developing solutions and Apps for Dynamics 365 in a SaaS environment can then be new territory for many Dynamics partners accustomed to Sure Step as the many technologies and opportunities in play with Dynamics 365 lend themselves more to a more agile development approach.

For service partners who wish to embed or connect their solution to Dynamics 365, but are new to Dynamics, will need to consider if they know how to embed their service in the Dynamics 365 flow and if they have (or even want to have) the technology knowledge needed to build the solution. They will also need to consider if they want to maintain it over time.

For all who wish to offer solutions together with Dynamics 365, a key component will be to fully understand user requirements in sufficient detail to build the intuitive and simple solution that satisfy both Microsoft and the users!
